Vespa SS180 or GS160 Front Hub Strip

Gene posted this tech advice on one of the UK forums recently, so I thought I’d recreate the post here:

Got some time to take a GS/SS hub apart.

1. Here we see the plate still installed that we are going to use to knock the axle out. Make sure the swing arm is supported on 2 blocks – you can just see them sticking out from underneath.

2. This shows the bearing retaining ring is removed – just the axle and bearing are remaining.

3. Use some heat to expand the aluminum.

4. A little more heat. Make sure to have some Twizzlers on hand for snacks. Yum Yum

5. Good use of an old socket and extension bar. Make sure whatever you use for a Drift is only going to hit the center of the plate – not the lipped edges which are actually part of the axle.

6. A few whacks and the plate has moved down, pushing the axle out with it.

7. Here you can see the plate has moved down. This shows well what is axle, and what is plate.

8. Axle falls right out. You can see it still has both bearings on it. That’s the next fun part. Removing the bearings from the axle without damaging it. The axle that is. Your gonna really damage the bearings getting them off. I had the two blocks of wood situated right on the center of the swing arm, the part that the ring nut screws into.

9. Cant quite see the plate in there. Blame the photographer!

10. Hollow swing arm, axle out, and plate out as well.

I’ve been chatting to a guy in Toronto that has bought out a Canadian dealer of a bunch of Vespa Ape parts. He’s a nice guy. Here’s what he had to say:

More white stuff falling – We’re closed

The employees have a snow day, but Gene and I were in work for a short while this morning. We got some stuff done, then had to make a run to the Post Office. We had extreme difficulty getting the short way there, and even more getting back to the shop, so as the snow is still coming down, we’ve decided to close for now.

We’ll have to see how much more comes down, but the forecast is not looking good

Keep warm everyone, and be careful if you have to be out on these roads. Its getting really nasty out there.

Snow Storm Coming

All the weather reports are forecasting a big snow storm for tomorrow, Wednesday 10th February 2010, possibly going into Thursday as well. It looks like road conditions may be OK in the morning, but deteriorating throughout the day.

Right now, we’re planning to try and open, with just Gene and I manning the phones but if its as bad as all the weather people are saying, we’ll close.

Scooters Originali is hosting a scooter swap meet on Saturday March 20th 2010 at our shop at 50 South Center Street, Unit 6, Orange NJ 07050, from 11am till whenever.

Bring all those parts you’ve had hanging around in your garage for ever, and swap them with other people, or sell them to get the money you need for new parts. Nothing to sell or swap? No problem. Just come and browse what other people have to sell.

There’ll be rare vintage Vespa and Lambretta parts, clothing, accessories and even a few modern Vespa bits and pieces, all being sold at unbelievably low prices. We need space and we need to clear the shelves off!

If you’re bringing parts to sell, just bring a blanket to throw all your parts on, as tables will be in short supply.

You own another shop and you want to attend and sell that excess inventory you’ve had on the shelves for a while? No problem. Drop us a line, paypal us $10, bring your own table and you’re ready to go.

We’ve moved, again!!

Last year was the flattest year we’ve had in about 10 years. We’ve watched long standing motorcycle dealers in our area, go out of business. It was a nerve wracking year!
So when we got the chance to move back into our old unit in this complex, lovely Unit 6, we jumped at the chance.
Yeah, its been a disappointing year, and we’re going to miss the bigger, stand alone building, but moving back into the old unit is one way we can make sure we’re still around for many years to come.

New book with coming out with good Vespa and Lambretta images

There’s a book coming out soon that looks like it has some really neat, historical images that include Vespa and Lambretta scooters. The book was originally relased in 1959 and to celebrate the book’s 50th anniversary The Aperture Foundation has revised and will be republishing it.

Old music video that Gene and his Lambretta was in

A fair few years back Gene and his scooter, and a few other people appeared in music videos for some different bands.

This is one of them, filmed at Coney Island.

Gene’s Lammy is the one that Nerissa is riding passenger on.
